The Moroccan Association for the Integration of Immigrants and Jovesólides, organisers of two congresses against Islamophobia in Malaga and in the Valencian Community, deeply regret the situation of Mohamed Said Badaoui, who since last night has been detained in Barcelona awaiting trial in view of the expulsion order issued by the Government. We are sorry for the pain that this situation is causing both Badaoui and his family, and we warn of the damage it may cause to the fight against the criminalisation and persecution of Muslim people.
We strongly support the work and peaceful action of all people and organisations working for intercultural and inter-religious coexistence in our country, especially those who strive to build bridges between communities of foreign and native origin; who fight against Islamophobia and against hatred towards any group of people on religious, ethnic, gender, sexual orientation or any other grounds that may undermine the full integration and inclusion of all our neighbours.
Its participation in both Congresses is proof of its exemplary peaceful activism, where the dissemination of a pedagogical discourse of tolerance, coexistence and respect for difference is a fundamental axis far removed from the radicalism of which it is accused. We trust in the proper functioning of the mechanisms and legal guarantees of a democratic state governed by the rule of law such as Spain, so that this situation can be resolved as soon as possible and further suffering and defencelessness for Badaoui and his family can be avoided.
Mohamed Said Badaoui was scheduled to speak at the Congresses against Islamophobia to be held in Malaga and Valencia in November. These are two pioneering forums in Spain to make Islamophobia visible as one of the main racist discriminations suffered by Muslims in the country, with the aim of debunking myths, making visible, acting and estimating the Islamic roots that have endured in our culture until today.
