In addition to socio-cultural services, the Generación Valores project includes a digital accompaniment service and technical support (mobile phones, tablets, computers...); a radio channel and free phone repairs and information. This year, around 450 people in the Comunitat Valenciana have already benefited from the programme.
Unwanted loneliness has become a silent disease in all ageing Western societies like Spain, where the birth rate has been declining for years, affecting mainly women over 80. Studies show that it is associated with a poorer quality of life, a deterioration in physical and mental health and a higher mortality rate. All these factors worsen with age and reduced mobility.
It is estimated that 23% of the elderly Spanish population of 65 years old suffer from unwanted loneliness , which means around 2.2 millionpeople. Almost 80% are womenaccording to data from Report of the Observatorio Ciudades que Cuidan 2020.
The magnitude of this complex problem is best seen considering that 9,527,263 people over 65 live in Spain, 20% of the country's total population according to the National Statistics Institute (INE 2022). Of them, two million live alone.
Generación Valores is a digital inclusion and active ageing project funded by the Conselleria de Igualdad and Políticas Inclusivas of the Generalitat, which provides for the 0.7% allocation of the Comunitat Valenciana's income tax.
