Forty-three migrant women in Cuenca, Ecuador, have been trained in social entrepreneurship and have received comprehensive support thanks to the La Ruta 4.0 cooperation project. This development cooperation initiative, led by ACOEC and Jovesólides in Spain, and Mensajeros de la Paz in Ecuador, seeks to promote the social and labor inclusion of women in situations of human mobility, addressing aspects such as human rights, interculturality, and intersectionality, within the framework of the 2030 Agenda, as well as female empowerment and social entrepreneurship. A valencian delegation traveled to Ecuador to evaluate the project’s progress and strengthen collaboration with the local community.
The La Ruta 4.0 project has had a significant impact on the lives of the participating women. Throughout the first year of its implementation, more than 40 women of different nationalities such as Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador itself, are being trained in business skills, and 70% of them are being trained in the use of ICTs, to create and manage their own enterprises in the future. Additionally, it is a comprehensive care initiative that focuses on improving the psychosocial and emotional health of women and their families, addressing key aspects of mental well-being, and among which also stand out attention to sexual and reproductive health, which will begin soon.
Furthermore, through legal support and legal advice, migrant women are acquiring greater knowledge about their rights and have received guidance to overcome the legal challenges they face in their regularization process in Ecuador. All participants have received personalized legal advice, which allows them to achieve greater stability. This component is crucial not only to empower women but also to strengthen their ability to defend their rights. Proof of this is that all the families that need it have already begun their regularization process.
A valencian delegation with representatives from Acoec and Jovesólides visited the facilities of Mensajeros de la Paz in Ecuador at the beginning of May to firsthand check the progress of the project, meet its participants, their contexts, and their enterprises. In addition, they attended some entrepreneurship training sessions that are being offered, and held meetings with representatives of the associative fabric of the city of Cuenca.
La Ruta 4.0 focuses on providing support to women responsible for their family units, prioritizing those who represent single-parent units with a single source of income. Through a comprehensive approach, the project strengthens the capacities of migrant women, providing them with tools and opportunities to improve their economic situation and emotional well-being.
Ecuador has become a significant destination for migrants from various countries in the region, due to economic and political crises in neighboring countries and more flexible migration policies implemented by the Ecuadorian government. In this context, addressing the situation of migrant women becomes a priority, as they often find themselves in vulnerable situations and face additional challenges in their integration process.
The La Ruta 4.0 project is an initiative driven by ACOEC and Jovesólides in Spain, and Mensajeros de la Paz in Ecuador. It is funded with funds from Valencian international cooperation by the Second Vice Presidency and the Ministry of Social Services, Equality, and Housing.
