Youth unemployment soars due to COVID-19: four out of ten young people are unemployed according to data from the latest Labour Force Survey (EPA), released by the National Institute of Statistics. And the youth unemployment rate, for those under 25 years old, rises ten points in 2020, up to 40.2%. This worrying situation is a shocking reality check for those with higher education qualifications and is especially concerning for those who do not have training. Discovering entrepreneurship can allow young people to open a new door to achieve employment and personal and professional growth.
Entrepreneurship as an alternative to unemployment was one of the initial propositions of the international LINT project (Literacy and numeracy training for young entrepreneurs) before the appearance of the pandemic. Now more than ever, the proposal aimed at young people could be a viable route to help escape unemployment. LINT focuses on young people with few qualifications or in vulnerable situations. The ultimate goal of the project: to improve the communication and numerical skills of young people, in order to enrich their training to ensure their success if they contemplate entrepreneurship as a career option.
Entering the sector could be a job opportunity for these young people, as Spain is the country with the highest youth unemployment rate in the European Union, at 40.2%. Data that differs greatly from that of Germany, with 6.1% and the European average, of 17.7%.
In recent weeks, the partner entities participating in the Erasmus + project are developing training modules, designed in the previous months. At Jovesólides this training has been focused on young people from La Coma. These young people, aged between 15 and 30, discover what entrepreneurship is. In addition, they receive training in effective communication and the use of ICT for communication.
Four entities from three countries participate in this European programme: Institute for training of personnel in international organisations (ITPIO) from Bulgaria, Institute for postgraduate studies at the university of national and world economy (IPS) from Bulgaria, K.A.N.E from the United Kingdom, and Jovesólides from Spain.
