More than 500 people of different religions will participate in the Muslim ceremony of breaking the fast during Ramadan with food and Sufi music on 31 March

In the emblematic Plaza de la Virgen de València, an Iftar de la Concordia will be held for the first time, a fraternal meeting of dialogue, coexistence and cultural exchange that will bring together more than 500 people on 31 March to celebrate the cultural and religious diversity of a multicultural city. Representatives of the Muslim, Christian and Jewish communities will take part in this ceremony to break the fast during Ramadan, as will various political authorities from the Valencian community, in a gesture aimed at strengthening intercultural relations and contributing to the fight against Islamophobia.
This unique event is an initiative of the Islamic Cultural Centre of Valencia (CCIV), Casa Morocco and Jovesólides, taking place for the first time in the emblematic Plaza de la Virgen de València, located in the historical centre of the old Arab Balansiya, where acts of great historical and symbolic value for all Valencian citizens take place, such as the sessions of the Tribunal de las Aguas; the laying of flowers in honour of the Virgen de los Desamparados during the Fallas, and all kinds of protest and festive demonstrations by the city's social movements. Since 2014, the CCIV has organized an Iftar de la Concordia in the Orriols neighborhood, bringing together hundreds of residents.

What is the Iftar of Concord?
Iftar (in Arabic, إفطار) is the night meal with which the fast is broken during the month of Ramadan. The Muslim community usually celebrates it as a community, with family, friends or groups of Muslims coming together to break the fast. It takes place just after sunset. It is a feast of communion, an authentic feast of brotherhood and solidarity. The Iftar de la Concordia wishes to extend this manifestation of joy to all the inhabitants of the city of Valencia, regardless of which religion they profess.
Participants can take part in the breaking of the fast ceremony and learn about Al Adan (call to prayer), Iftar (breaking of the fast with food from different countries) and the Sufi music of the Andalusian Group with traditional Moroccan music. There will also be free Arabic calligraphy and henna tattoos.

The month of Ramadan is one of the fundamental pillars of Islam. In Spain, around two and a half million Muslims celebrate this month of fasting, prayer and reflection. This festival, however, remains unknown to the entire Spanish population.
The Iftar de la Concordia aims to contribute to the knowledge and dissemination of this important annual event for the Muslim community and, moreover, to contribute to the fight against Islamophobia through the inclusive appreciation of its customs.
