In the last two years, in the wake of the pandemic, the younger generation has increased their use of technology. The notable increase in hours in front of screens also has seen an increase in worry for young people, their security and their wellbeing. Facing this new reality, programmes such as 'Internet Segura', continue to be necessary to accompany young boys, girls, and families.
In spring we learned that more than 50% of them and teenagers were worried about their privacy and online exposure. 70% of young people between the ages of 15 and 17 log on to social media daily, and one in two are logged in for more than two hours a day. This is some of the data discovered in the report ‘Actitudes y conductas de privacidad en una muestra de adolescentes de la Comunitat Valenciana’,prepared by the chair of ‘Buen Uso de las TIC’ and powered by la Conselleria de Innovación, Universidades, Ciencia y Sociedad Digital, in collaboration with the Universidad Miguel Hernández (UMH) de Elche.
Facing this scenario, the organisation in the last few years has continued to work on the programme 'Internet Segura' with the aim of boosting digital education and encouraging responsible use of the internet. Because young people are digital natives, but being born in the technological era does not make them more cognitively inclined to have a greater capacity in using technology. The educational researcher, Catherine L'Ecuyer, points out in her article that this is a myth. The so-called 'Generación Google' can have a great familiarity and agility with technology but 'lack critical and analytical competencies' to use the web. To improve the optimal level of digital literacy they need accompanient which makes their experience online optimal and safe.
Throughout 2021 a total of 200 students, teachers and family members in educative centres in the Comunidad Valenciana, have participated in educational activities. Lastly, learning the correct use of digital tools to guarantee defence, protection and prevention of children in situations of addiction and abuse when they use ICT.
The use of social media, cyberbullying, grooming, phishing,sexting... are some of the issues that have been present in the trainings developed online and in person.
In the next few weeks, the organisation will also have a training programme focussed on 'Internet Segura' focused on young people in the La Coma neighbourhood.
