MIGRAHUB | Migrant-based associations meet in Valencia to pay tribute to the victims of the floods and raise funds for the families affected.
València’s migrant associations have come together in a day of solidarity to pay tribute to the 223 fatalities and three missing persons as a result of the DANA and to raise funds for the families affected in Alfafar, one of the towns in l’Horta Sud worst hit by the October floods in the province of Valencia. Under the slogan ‘Migration and solidarity, the strength of the community in action’, a hundred people took part in the commemoration of the International Day of Migrants, which included a round table and a fair of associations.
As part of the MigraHub project, Jovesólides, in collaboration with CES Africa, organised a fair of migrant organisations to raise awareness of the work of these associations, strengthen their networking and raise solidarity funds for those affected by the DANA. 1,400 euros were raised for the Koordinadora de Kolectivos del Parke Alcosa, a citizens’ collective that has been fighting poverty and exclusion for more than 30 years in this impoverished neighbourhood of Alfafar, characterised by a lack of resources and investment. During the floods, it has pulled out all its muscle to help hundreds of vulnerable families, many of them of migrant origin.
After handing over the donation to the Koordinadora, the President of Jovesólides, Lourdes Mirón, highlighted the role of the group of migrant origin ‘who not only suffered the ravages of the flood, but also have been involved in the recovery with an admirable commitment. From cleaning houses to accompanying people affected, their work has been fundamental in rebuilding not only physical spaces, but also hope and the social fabric’.
‘The collaboration between entities such as those that accompany us today,’ he concluded, ’demonstrates that united we are capable of overcoming any adversity. Let us continue to build together a community that is more just, resilient and full of opportunities for all’.

MIGRAHUB | The proceeds raised by the migrant organisations were donated to the Koordinadora de Kolectivos del Parke Alcosa in Alfafar.
During the day, a round table was also held to analyse the action of organised civil society during the humanitarian emergency and its role in the reconstruction of the affected areas, as well as the decisive contribution of citizens of migrant origin. Taking part in the debate were the Vice-President of Casa Marruecos, Boutaina El Hadri; the activist of Women, Voices and Resistance, Katherine Trujillo; the President of the Federation African Union Spain, Papa Balla; the President of the Valencian NGDO Coordinator (CVONGD), Enrique Asensi; and the President of the Voluntary Platform of the Valencian Community, Miguel Salvador.
To round off the event, a musical tribute was paid to all the victims. The hud of Alberto Mateo, a victim of the floods, joined the rhythms of the group Ànima, fusing Valencian roots rhythms with Arab sounds and instruments.
The first edition of MigraHub has trained representatives of 10 migrant-based associations in the province of Valencia, who have been accompanied in the process of strengthening their structures so that they can amplify their social action.
They have learned how to strategically plan their organisations; how to draw up volunteer and fundraising plans; how to organise events and activities; as well as key strategies and tools to communicate their social action more effectively. Emphasis has also been placed on mutual collaboration to strengthen networking.
These are Paraguayans in Action; Casa Marruecos; Casa Perú; CES Africa, Vive la Vida y Goza Bailando; Aquarius Supervivientes; Nourdine; Amaan; and the African Women’s Association of Paterna.
MigraHub is a project of education for global citizenship and development, promoted by Jovesólides, with funding from the Vice-presidency of Social Services, Equality and Housing from the budget allocation from the IRPF.
