The facilities of the Jardín de Yemas de Agli nursery school, the only one in this village of Taroudant, are now ready to welcome its 33 pupils for the next school year. This educational space is managed by the Moroccan association Generación Comprometida and had been seriously affected by the earthquake that struck Marrakech in September 2023.
During the official inauguration, a welcome party was held with the participation of the president of Casa Marruecos, Rahma El Basraoui, and the president of Jovesólides, Lourdes Mirón. Both have been able to see first-hand that the entire community of Agli has been involved in the reconstruction of the school, with the active participation of the children, parents, and the volunteers of Generación Comprometida, demonstrating – in the words of El Basraoui – a strong spirit of collaboration and commitment to education and the welfare of children”. Mirón stressed that “this joint effort not only marks the reopening of a crucial educational centre, but also symbolises the resilience and commitment of communities to rebuild and move forward after adversity”.
The Jardín de Yemas nursery school is not only a place of learning for the youngest children but also a vital space for mothers’ literacy, thus contributing to the integral development of the community. For this reason, in addition to the reconstruction and equipping of the nursery school, ensuring safe and adequate facilities for the next school year, a space has also been provided for the women of the village who will be able to resume their cooperative activities and literacy classes in a renovated environment.
The school was founded in 2005. After 18 years of operation, the facilities had been restored with the enthusiasm and work of many people involved in the community, but the devastating earthquake in the south of Marrakech in September 2023 prevented the opening of the facilities, which were completely destroyed as a result of the earthquake. With a population of around 7,000 in the village of Taroudant, the recovery of this centre in Agli means guaranteeing access to quality education in dignified conditions.
It has been rebuilt thanks to the joint efforts of various organisations and donors who have contributed nearly 12,000 euros in a solidarity campaign promoted by Jovesólides, Casa Marruecos and CES Africa. In addition, the Town Council of Quart de Poblet is also collaborating in the reconstruction through a line of funding for development cooperation.
